Staff of the Week

Office Assistant Cilia Jurdy
Hello! Welcome to Career Services! I am a freshman as well as an Office Assistant for Career Services. Career Services, along with being a great resource for both students and alumni, is a wonderful place to work. My favorite part definitely has to be the great attitude all my co-workers embody. My job is both challenging and fun, I am always learning something new regarding professionalism and serving others. Career Services is great at ensuring students are prepared to enter into the workforce as intelligent and capable professionals.
I was born and raised in Seattle, though Capitol Hill was never where I spent much time, so even though I’m going to a college in my city, it still feels new and exciting. I am currently majoring in International Studies with a minor in Art History. I hope to study abroad in the Middle East. My favorite thing about Seattle University is the diversity of thought all students and professors have, and the eagerness to learn that is present here.  If you need any help in career advising, interview preparation, or just need to polish your resume, 
Career Services is an amazing resource to utilize. You won’t regret it!

This 30-minute workshop will guide students through Seattle University's online job and internship database, the Redhawk Network.
At the end of this training, you will be able to:
1) access your student account and manage your personal profile

2) conduct a job search and set up a Job Agent

3) search for on-campus interviews and apply for interview schedules

4) RSVP for Career Services workshops, career fairs, and trainings

The Retail Management Development Internship Program gives you an in-depth look at the business of retail and successful completion prepares you for a future career. College juniors graduating in 2014 are also eligible to apply.
Nordstrom is seeking juniors and seniors for their Retail Management Development Internship program. They will be conducting informational interviews from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Jan. 30 and 31. Q&A

“What is appropriate to wear to an interview?”
This is a question that arises often, and this week, the Career Services staff helps us give their tips!

Alissa Strong: Make sure you feel confident in what you're wearing and that it's tailored to fit you well - that will also help you feel confident in the interview and on the job.

James Vivé: Try and avoid wearing something new for the first time to an interview, for example, a new pair of shoes that look good but become uncomfortable after a while can distract you from the interview. For guys, if you aren't accustomed to wearing a suit and tie, look for occasions to wear them before the big interview so that you don't feel as self conscious during the interview. The upcoming Internship Fair on February 7th and the Etiquette Dinner on February 27th are great chances to try out your interview clothes before you really need them.

Maggie Heier: You should dress at least one step up from what you would envision you would be wearing day-to-day if you got the job. So if you think you would be in business casual most days at that organization, wear formal business attire for the interview. Or if the place is extremely casual, you might dress business casual for the interview. When in doubt, dress up more than you think you should.

This week, Nordstrom recruiter, Lindsey Daniels, held an info session on campus to inform students about how to dress for success!
Some tips from the event were:
  • Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.
  • Invest in a few “high” pieces which you will wear for years to come – such as a blazer, skirt, and trouser for ladies and suits in black, charcoal, or navy for gentlemen.
  • Be confident in whatever you choose to wear, and make sure to add a personal flare to it!
  • Ladies: Wear outfits that compliment your figure, hosiery can have fun designs, but keep makeup and perfume to moderation!
  • Gentlemen: The tie and shirt should have different patterns (ex. stripes on plaid), suit should always be worn with the whole set, do not button both buttons on the jacket, and make sure everything is wrinkle free!
