Week of 1/22/2013

Staff of the Week

Graduate Assistant Maggie Heier
Hello and welcome! Whether you are clear about your academic and professional aspirations or whether you are still exploring, we are here to help you every step of the way.
I am a graduate assistant and career advisor in Career Services. I meet with students individually through Express Advising and also for longer 30-minute follow up appointments. In addition I enjoy presenting workshops on a range of career-related topics around campus. Talking with students about their career goals and aspirations is one of my favorite things, and I have a special passion for working with Pre-major students and students who are still exploring their interests.
In addition to working in the office I am also a graduate student in the Student Development Administration (SDA) program in the College of Education here at SU and will graduate this June 2013. Prior to moving to Seattle for graduate school I worked as a pre-major advisor for journalism students at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. I look forward to seeing you around campus!

Employer of the Week

In 1901, John W. Nordstrom used his stake from the Alaska gold rush to open a small shoe store in Seattle, Washington. Today, Nordstrom is one of the nation's leading fashion retailers, offering a wide variety of fine quality apparel, shoes and accessories for men, women and children. Now in our 100th year, we operate stores across the country and remain committed to our founding principles of quality, value, selection and service. They also happen to be paying a visit to Seattle University this upcoming week! If you are interested in learning more about business in the fashion industry and possibly seeking an internship opportunity, make sure to come to the info session on Thursday, January 24th.

Question & Answer

“What is a cover letter and do I really need a cover letter?”
A cover letter is a letter of intent written to an employer when applying for a new job or internship. It briefly states who you are, the reasons why you want to work with them, and some skills from previous experiences that would be useful for the new opportunity. Sometimes a cover letter is not required, but even so, it’s not a bad idea to write a one or even provide a “mini” cover letter in an email in which you’re attaching your resume.
