Featured Staff Alissa Strong

Hello! I’m Alissa Strong, one of the career advisors at Career Services. I enjoy my work most because I get to learn what sparks interest in each student that comes through our office. We are all very privileged in that we can choose to have conversations about which career paths we’d like to take and have so many opportunities at SU and in this area to explore those pathways.
I also work with students a lot on building their confidence and understanding their unique skills and strengths. Sometimes it’s hard to talk about yourself in an interview or on a resume! That’s why reflecting on and acknowledging your accomplishments is key to marketing yourself.
Since many of us spend 40+ hours a week at work, I hope to help students and alumni seek out opportunities that offer an enjoyable/comfortable work environment and a role that utilizes their best qualities. Not sure exactly what it is you want to do yet? It’s ok! Many of us still don’t know… or change our minds a lot.
Alissa Strong is an Assistant Director of Outreach and works primarily with students and alumni from Science & Engineering, Nursing, and Theology and Ministry programs.

Q&A
“Can I still access Career Services and your resources even after I graduate from Seattle University?”
Absolutely, we offer many opportunities, events, and workshops for our SU alumni through our office! Just like the current students, alumni can come in during advising hours or make an appointment to meet with one. Three years upon graduation, alumni are considered “experienced alum” and can meet no more than three times a year with our advisors. However, alumni also have access to the Redhawk Network whenever you please! If you graduated prior to 2007 and have never accessed the Redhawk Network, please create an account for yourself here.

Alumni are also welcome to attend our annual events such as the Part-Time Job Fair in the fall, Internship Fair in the winter, and the upcoming Career Expo in the spring. Employer Information Sessions, which generally happen on a weekly basis, are also open for you to attend. These are great opportunities for students and alumni alike to connect with employers.

In addition, we offer many alumni workshops to help better your professional life.
This spring we are offering:
March 19th & 26th
Out of The Middle Marketing For Therapists and Coaches
April 23rd ~ May 14th (4 part series)
“Tools for Career Transition-Looking for a Job, a Career Change or Re-start”
June 6th ~ June 27th (4 part series)

Q&A
“When is a good time to start looking for summer internship opportunities?”
Surprisingly, now is the perfect time to start looking and applying for summer opportunities. Many companies have already posted their summer internship opportunities and the deadlines can be as soon as this month. When seeking a summer internship, keep in mind what educational benefits and personal growth you hope to seek out of the experience. The Redhawk Network is a great place to seek out internships in the greater Seattle area, but if you are planning to go home for the summer, be sure to check out ways you can connect with employers through LinkedIn with SU alumni and reciprocity we have with other Jesuit Institutes around the nation. The reciprocity system allows SU students to connect with career services offices with other Jesuit (and some non-Jesuit) institutes in order to gain access to their job boards similar to our Redhawk Network. If you like to learn more about how to create an account, be sure to email careerservices@seattleu.edu or come into our office so we can help send a request to any of the universities.
Here is a list of all the institutes in which we have reciprocity with:

Featured Staff:
Assistant Director James Vivé
I’ve been with Career Services since August of 2005. Back then the office was known as the Career Development Center. It has been fascinating to see the changes and growth over time both within our office and for the university as a whole. One of the things that has remained constant are the mission and values of our institution which deeply inform the work we do in Career Services. Helping students and alumni reflect on their experiences to help inform their future decisions has been powerful and deeply gratifying work. It is an honor to serve our community.

United States Marine Corps
Fitness Challenge and Platoon Leader Info Session
Oh Thursday, March 7th from 2pm to 4:30pm, the US Marine Corps will be hosting a fitness challenge on campus! The challenge will take place on the front lawn of the fitness center where students can challenge their strengths and see how they stand alongside Marine Corp members! Please join us for this exciting challenge and stay afterwards for an information session if you are interested in applying to become a Platoon Leader for the Marine Corps.
This program will challenge you, but will also put you far past your college counterparts who will still be in entry-level internship positions. Besides the opportunity to earn academic credit and add a great internship experience for your resume, you will learn how to adapt, overcome and lead. While your peers work behind a desk, you will have the opportunity to develop leadership skills in a diverse environment surrounded by other motivated individuals from around the country. This program is more than an internship; it’s an opportunity to challenge yourself mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually beyond what you thought possible.
For more information, please contact Sarah Thomson in the Career Services office by calling the front desk at 206-296-6080.

Q&A
“Is there a certain standard for how resumes should look like?”
Yes, there is a standard on how resumes should generally look. Generally, a resume is one page with your name bolded and larger than the other text to make sure employers can decipher between the piles of resumes they receive. Most employers will spend 15-30 seconds reading your resume so make sure to put the most important information in the top 2/3 of the page and have tailored section headings so it is easy to read. Check out our online resources here to help you see some examples and create an outstanding resume for yourself! Our advisors are also here to help you throughout the process so make sure to come into our office to receive additional resources!
